Tampa, Fla. (Jan. 22, 2023) – The University of South Florida women's tennis team opened their spring season Sunday, falling 6-1 vs 18th ranked Florida.
"I thought it was a really good first match to start off with," said Head Coach Cristina Moros. "The Gators are a top team in the country, so we were lucky to get them here."
Florida came out strong in the doubles portion, defeating South Florida on all three courts to claim the point.
"In doubles they didn't give us much, they played really solid," said Moros. "I didn't think we played that bad. I think they just played the points better than us."
In singles action Sierra Berry gave the Bulls their first point of the day, earning a 6-3, 6-2 victory against Florida's Anastasia Sysoeva. "She looked really good from start to finish," said Moros.
Florida responded with wins on courts one, six, two, and four to clinch the victory.
USF's Marta Falceto Font continued her back and forth match with Emily De Oliveira despite the Gators already claiming the win. Falceto Font won the first set 6-2 before ultimately falling 5-7 and 10-4 in the second and tiebreaker sets.
Despite the loss, Coach Moros sees her group's potential. "Overall, pretty pleased with our first match and a lot to build on."
