TAMPA, Fla. (October 13, 2023) – The University of South Florida men's soccer (3-7, 1-3) heads to Philadelphia, Pa. for a meeting with Temple (2-5-3, 1-2-1) at the Temple Sports Complex on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. and the match will air live on ESPN+.
Â
SETTING THE STAGE
The Bulls have won one of their last four matches.
Jalen Anderson leads USF with 5 goals on the year and
Ajmeer Spengler has a team-best four assists. Temple is on a two-game hot streak. The Owls shocked #10 Syracuse, 2-1, in their previous outing, the team's first-ranked win in three seasons and their second victory in a row this season.
Â
SOUTH FLORIDA-TEMPLE SERIES
USF has won 9 of 13 all-time meetings against Temple, which extends back to the 2013 season. The Bulls are looking for their fifth straight win against the Owls. In the last clash, South Florida bested Temple, 2-1 at home (Sep. 24, 2022).
Â
LAST TIME OUT
South Florida fell short to Charlotte, 2-1, on Sunday (Oct. 8), snapping a three-game win streak in the series. • Jonathan Nyandjo capitalized on a golden chance for the 49ers in the opening segment, scoring the first goal. The penalty kick would come by virtue of a foul on
Alan Horrocks, resulting from interfering with a shot opportunity from Nyandjo, allowing for the free chance. In the closing segment,
Jemone Barclay assisted
Segun Afolabi to knot it up even of a corner that was tapped in for his first goal of the season, sixth in his career. However, the 49ers would replicate that late with less than 30 seconds to play in the match, a pinballed shot of the head by Daniel Moore, sealing USF loss.
SCOUTING THE OWLS
Felix Ewald leads the team with two assists and three goals, all three of which have come during conference play.
Â
A LOOK AHEAD
South Florida heads DeLand, Fla. for its final nonconference matchup of the year. Kickoff at Stetson is slated for 7:00 p.m. and the match will air live on ESPN+.
Â
USF ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME
Alumni Jeff Attinella has been selected as a member of the 2023 USF Athletics Hall of Fame Class and will be inducted on Thurs., Nov. 9. Attinella is one of two student-athletes to receive that honor in USF men's soccer history. An NSCAA First-Team All-American goalkeeper (2009), a three-time All-Region selection, and three-time Big East All-Conference honoree, earning first-team honors in both in 2009, Attinella played on four NCAA Tournament Teams and helped lead the 2007 team to the NCAA Sweet 16 and the 2008 team to the NCAA Elite Eight.
