South Florida drops opener at Memphis, 4-2

Hunter Mink struck out nine Tigers over 5.2 IP on Friday night.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (May 5, 2023) – The University of South Florida Bulls (18-29, 6-10 AAC) suffered a 4-2 loss on Friday night in the opener of a three-game weekend series at the University of Memphis (24-22, 6-10 AAC).

Hunter Mink (Palm Harbor) struck out a career-high nine batters over 5.2 IP. The right-hander allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits with a pair of walks and hit batters in the setback.

Travis Sankovich (Uniontown, Pa.) gave South Florida an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on an RBI-single. The Bulls looked to take a 2-0 advantage on the base hit, but John Montes (Toa Alto, Puerto Rico) was cut down on the basepaths before the second run crossed the plate to end the frame.

The Tigers pulled in front on a two-run double in the bottom of the third inning. USF knotted the score at 2-2 on a groundout by Montes in the top of the sixth, but Memphis answered back with the go-ahead run in the bottom of the inning.

Daniel Cantu (Jacksonville) went 2-for-3 with a walk, double and two runs scored for USF.

  • Drew Brutcher (Lakeland) is currently tied for seventh all-time in program history with 29 career home runs.
  • Brutcher and Bobby Boser (Wesley Chapel) are both riding five-game hitting streaks.
