TAMPA, Fla. (August 26, 2023) – The University of South Florida women's soccer team returns to the pitch for a road matchup against FGCU on Sunday. The Bulls will face their second opponent of the 2023 campaign that reached the NCAA Women's College Cup Tournament last season. USF and FGCU are slated for a 1 p.m. first touch on ESPN+.
USF is coming off a 5-1 win against Alabama A&M in the home opener on Thursday. The match featured four different goal scorers as well as four players that notched an assist.
Anna Sutter led the way with two goals, while
Gentiana Fetaj,
Peyton Vincze, and
Kouri Peace each added a goal. Fetaj,
Serita Thurton,
Elyse Thornton, and
Linnea Nestor dished out one assist each.
Series History with FGCU
The Bulls and Eagles have met five times, with USF winning four of those meetings. South Florida has won the last three matchups, including a 3-1 victory last season in Tampa. USF won the lone road trip to Fort Myers, 2-1, on September 19, 2021. The Bulls have outscored the Eagles 10-4 in the five meetings.
Scouting the Eagles
FGCU is the defending ASUN Tournament Champions. The Eagles enter Sunday's contest with a 1-1 record. FGCU is led by Ashley Labbe and Erika Zschuppe, who both were named to the Preseason All-ASUN Team. Labbe, Zschuppe, Maya Benley Buisan, and Kendal Gargiula have found the back of the net once for the Eagles. Olivia Molina has been in net for FGCU in both matches and has made 11 saves. Molina has one clean sheet and has allowed one goal on the season.

The 2023 season marks the 17th and final for head coach Denise Schilte-Brown at the helm of the Bulls. Schilte-Brown guided South Florida to the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament in 2010 and the Bulls have made eight total postseason appearances (2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021) in the last 13 years. USF posted five consecutive seasons with a conference championship, winning the regular-season title in 2018, 2020, and 2021, while earning the tournament crown in 2017, 2019, and 2020. USF alum and Olympic Gold Medalist, Evelyne Viens, was selected fifth overall in the NWSL Draft by the Sky Blue FC, now Gotham FC. Viens was one of four Pro Bulls to participate in the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.
