South Florida Opens Conference Play Against Temple

TAMPA, Fla. (September 13, 2023) – The University of South Florida women's soccer team returns to the road for The American Athletic Conference opener against Temple on Thursday. The Bulls and Owls are slated for a 7 p.m. first touch on ESPN+.
 
In the last match, USF fell to in-state rival UCF, 2-0. The South Florida defense held the Central Florida attack to no shots on goal in the first half. The first half was the third-straight half the Bulls held an opponent to zero shots on goal. The Bulls enter Thursday with a 3-4-0 record, while the Owls have a 1-4-3 mark.
 
Bulls at a Glance
Georgia Brown and Anna Sutter are tied for the team lead with five goals and 10 points. The two are tied for 44th in the NCAA and tied for first in the conference. Gentiana Fetaj is currently tied for 13th in the nation with five assists and is tied for 15th with 0.71 assists per match. Fetaj has added a goal and is third on the squad with seven points. Micahela Hill is third on the team with two goals. Vivianne Bessette, Peyton Vincze, Amaris Hamilton-Grein, Regan Kelly, Kendall Lincoln, Signe Markvardsen, and Kouri Peace have all added one goal. Bessette, Vincze, Jaide Simone Prejean, and Serita Thurton all have two assists apiece on the season. Hamilton-Grein, Hill, Linnea Nestor, Elyse Thornton, and Olivia Mancini all have one assist. Leire Herraez Gallach has a team-best 11 saves in five matches. Arden La-Rose has appeared in six matches and has eight saves on the year. As a team, USF is tied for 21st in the country with 9.14 shots on goal per match, which is second in The American. With 2.57 assists per match, the Bulls are tied for 28th in the NCAA and tied for most in the AAC. South Florida is tied for 27th in the NCAA with 20 goals, tied for 29th in the country with 58 points, and tied for 29th in the nation with 18 assists.
 
Series History with Temple
The Bulls and the Owls will meet for the 11th time on Thursday. USF holds a 9-1-0 series advantage and has won the last four meetings. In the last meeting, the Bulls knocked off the Owls, 2-0, in Tampa last season. South Florida is 3-1-0 against Temple in Philadelphia.
 
Scouting the Owls
Temple is led by goalkeeper Tamsin Bynoe. Bynoe has 31 saves on the season, which is tied for 65th in the NCAA. Her 5.17 saves per match are tied for 55th in the country. Bynoe has made five starts on the season and has a save percentage of .738 percent. Offensively, Beky Myers has a team-best four points, with two goals on the year. Nicole Sweeney is second on the squad with three points, with a goal and an assist. Sumaya Togba is the final Owl with a goal.

The 2023 season marks the 17th and final for head coach Denise Schilte-Brown at the helm of the Bulls. Schilte-Brown guided South Florida to the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament in 2010 and the Bulls have made eight total postseason appearances (2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021) in the last 13 years. USF posted five consecutive seasons with a conference championship, winning the regular-season title in 2018, 2020, and 2021, while earning the tournament crown in 2017, 2019, and 2020. USF alum and Olympic Gold Medalist, Evelyne Viens, was selected fifth overall in the NWSL Draft by the Sky Blue FC, now Gotham FC. Viens was one of four Pro Bulls to participate in the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.
