TAMPA (September 22, 2023) – In a tense conference opening matchup, the University of South Florida men's soccer (2-5, 0-1) fell to No. 6/3 SMU (7-1, 2-0), 2-1, at Corbett Stadium on Friday evening.

The Mustangs managed to find the net first in the early going. In the 17th minute, Jeldrik Dallmann scored the first goal of the night for the visitors. From that point on it was a tense back-and-forth battle on the pitch. Then in the 58
th minute, the Bulls'
Brian Schaefer netted the equalizer off of a corner from
Ajmeer Spengler. Less than sixty seconds later, Dallmann scored again for SMU, which put the visitors up 2-1 for the remainder of the contest.

NOTABLE NUMBERS
- Schaefer's goal was his first of the season and the fifth of his career.
- Spengler's assist was his fourth of the season and ninth of his career.
- SMU collected its ninth all-time win against USF, The Bulls hold a record of 5-9-4 in the series.
- Pedro Faife, Alan Horrocks, and Schaefer each logged 90' minutes in tonight's match.

USF Men's Soccer competed in the school's first-ever intercollegiate athletic contest on Sept. 25, 1965, beating Florida Southern 4-3.
