South Florida Welcomes No. 21 Gonzaga for Sunday Showdown

TAMPA, Fla. (September 23, 2023) – The University of South Florida women's soccer team is back on the pitch of Corbett Stadium on Sunday for a battle with No. 21 Gonzaga. The Bulls enter with an overall record of 4-4-1, while the Bulldogs are 7-7-1. The match is scheduled for a first touch of 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
 
South Florida is coming off a 0-0 draw with Charlotte in the conference home opener. The Bulls held the 49ers to zero shots in the first half and only allowed one shot on goal for the match. In the last four matches, USF has held opponents to zero shots on goal in four of the eight halves.
 
Sunday's match will be Bark with the Bulls along with Youth and Camper Day. All dogs in attendance will receive one free pup cup. The concession stand will be offering a $5 kid hot dog combo. Parking is free for all fans in attendance for women's soccer matches.
 
Bulls Against Ranked Opponents
South Florida is 9-39-4 all-time against ranked opponents with its last victory coming against Washington, 2-0, in the NCAA Tournament on November 22, 2019.

Sutter leads the team with six goals and 12 points. She is tied for 49th in the NCAA with 0.67 goals per match, which is tied for third in the conference. Her six goals are tied for 45th in the country, while her 12 points are tied for 99th. Georgia Brown is second on the team with five goals and 10 points. Gentiana Fetaj is currently tied for 13th in the nation with six assists, which is tied for tops in The American. She is tied for 14th in the nation and is tied for the conference lead with 0.67 assists per match. Fetaj has added a goal and is third on the squad with eight points. Micahela Hill and Bessette are tied for third on the team with two goals. Peyton Vincze, Amaris Hamilton-Grein, Regan Kelly, Kendall Lincoln, Signe Markvardsen, and Kouri Peace have all added one goal. Bessette, Vincze, Jaide Simone Prejean, and Serita Thurton all have two assists apiece on the season. Hamilton-Grein, Hill, Linnea Nestor, Elyse Thornton, and Olivia Mancini all have one assist. Leire Herraez Gallach has a team-best 17 saves in six matches. Arden La-Rose has appeared in six matches and has eight saves on the year. As a team, USF is 18th in the country with 9.11 shots on goal per match, which is second in The American. With 2.11 assists per match, the Bulls are tied for 41st in the NCAA and are second in the AAC. South Florida is tied for 39th in the NCAA with 22 goals, 43rd in the country with 63 points, and 43rd in the nation with 19 assists.

Scouting the Bulldogs
The Zags are led by Giana Riley and Kelsey Oyler. Riley is tied for ninth in the country with nine goals and she is tied for eighth in the nation with 21 points, nine goals and three assists. Oyler paces the squad with seven assists, which is tied for fifth in the NCAA. Kate Doyle is second on the team with seven goals and is tied for 23rd in the country. Marissa Garcia, Maddie Kemp, Shelby Runje, Katelyn Rigg, and Paige Alexander have all tallied multiple goals on the season. As a unit, Gonzaga is second in the NCAA with 10.22 points per game and in scoring with 3.67 goals per match. The Bulldogs are third in the country with 33 goals, tied for fifth in the nation with 92 points, and tied for 14th in the NCAA with 26 assists. Lauren Towne leads the Zags with 26 saves in nine matches. She has three clean sheets on the season. Her save percentage of .839 is tied for 45th in the country.

The 2023 season marks the 17th and final for head coach Denise Schilte-Brown at the helm of the Bulls. Schilte-Brown guided South Florida to the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament in 2010 and the Bulls have made eight total postseason appearances (2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021) in the last 13 years. USF posted five consecutive seasons with a conference championship, winning the regular-season title in 2018, 2020, and 2021, while earning the tournament crown in 2017, 2019, and 2020. USF alum and Olympic Gold Medalist, Evelyne Viens, was selected fifth overall in the NWSL Draft by the Sky Blue FC, now Gotham FC. Viens was one of four Pro Bulls to participate in the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.
