Bulls suffer 3-2 loss in extra innings at UCF

Hunter Mink recorded the sixth quality start of his career in Friday’s no decision.

ORLANDO (March 1, 2024) – The University of South Florida Bulls (4-4) had the undefeated UCF Knights (7-0) on the ropes Friday night in the opener of a three-game weekend series, but were unable to put the home team away in a 3-2 loss in 10 innings.

Hunter Mink (Palm Harbor) turned in the sixth quality start of his career, and first of the season, in a no decision. Mink allowed one run on four hits with seven strikeouts over 6.0 IP.

Two-way standout Bryce Archie (Powder Springs, Ga.) was charged with the loss, but did a masterful job escaping a jam when he entered the game in the ninth inning, in just his second collegiate outing, and forced the game into extra innings before the Knights plated the winning run in the 10th.

The Bulls, who led 2-0 after four innings, had a chance to pad their 2-1 lead in the eighth and retake a lead in the ninth, but left runners stranded both times. South Florida loaded the bases with one out in the eighth inning and put two on with one out in the ninth, but UCF blanked the Bulls in both instances.

A leadoff double by Rafael Betancourt (Deltona) in the fourth inning led to the first run of the game when Jackson Mayo (St. John's) followed with an RBI-double. Mayo later came around to score on a wild pitch for a 2-0 advantage.

The Knights got on the board on a two-out solo homer by Anrew Estrella, who launched his fourth home run in as many games. UCF later tied the game in the bottom of the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly.

Notable

  • Chandler Dorsey (Lakeland) tallied his fourth scoreless relief appearance of the year in his fifth outing of the season.
  • Matt Rose (Clearwater) and Eric Snow (Forsyth, Ga.) each extended their current hitting streaks to four games.
  • Drew Brutcher (Lakeland) and Ben Rozenblum (Coral Springs) have each reached base safely in all eight games this season.
