USF drops series opener at Tulane

Rafael Betancourt went 3-for-4 with a double in Friday’s 11-3 loss.

NEW ORLEANS, La. (April 12, 2024) – The University of South Florida Bulls (20-14, 6-4 AAC) had their four-game winning streak snapped on Friday night in an 11-3 setback at Tulane University (19-15, 4-6 AAC) in the opener of a three-game series against the Green Wave.

The South Florida pitching staff issued 13 walks and hit four batters in the game, including three with the bases loaded, after surrendering just five total over their previous four outings. Tulane's staff only walked one USF batter.

A four-run second inning for the Green Wave against Hunter Mink (Palm Harbor) was the biggest blow of the ballgame. Mink had only allowed five total runs over his previous two starts (17.0 IP) and Tulane tagged him for five runs over the first two innings of play on Friday night.

The scoring began in the bottom of the first when Tulane's Colin Tuft extended his hitting streak to 18 games with a leadoff double and came around to score two batters later after a pair of groundouts.

The Bulls got that run back in the top of the second after Rafael Betancourt (Deltona) doubled with two outs and came around to score on a base hit by Eric Snow (Forsyth, Ga.) to tie the game at 1-1 before Tulane answered quickly for a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning.

Marcus Brodil (Dunedin) extended his career-best hitting streak to 11 games with a two-run single in the top of the seventh inning.
