SAN ANTONIO, Texas (May 10, 2024) – Bobby Boser (Wesley Chapel) and Drew Brutcher (Lakeland) each homered on Friday night at Roadrunner Field, but their solo blasts weren't enough in a 5-2 loss as the University of South Florida Bulls (23-26, 9-13 AAC) fell to the UTSA Roadrunners (28-20, 14-8 AAC).
Boser has homered in three straight games and claimed sole possession of eighth place in program history with his 30th career home run. Brutcher moved into a tie for fifth place all-time with his 39th career homer.
UTSA scored first on Friday night with a run in the bottom of the first inning and the Roadrunners stretched their lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth.
Boser's homer run put South Florida on the board in the top of the sixth. His towering shot to the opposite field was directly into the teeth of sustained winds throughout the game that reached gusts of 20mph blowing in from right-center field.
Brutcher's home run in the eighth inning also cut through the wind to slash the UTSA lead to 5-2.
The Bulls put runners on the corners with one out in the top of the ninth, but failed to get any closer to the lead as the Roadrunners claimed the series opener.
USF outhit UTSA, 10-7, and had six extra-base hits to the Roadrunners' one, but the Bulls went 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position and ran into a pair of outs on the basepaths early in the ballgame.
Notable
- Boser has homered in three straight games twice this season and leads the team with 11 home runs. He has hit safely in six straight games and is batting .529 (9-for-17) with four homers and a double over his last five games.
- Brutcher is two home runs away from sole possession of fourth place on the USF career list.
- John Montes (Toa Alto, Puerto Rico) recorded his team-leading 18th multi-hit game of the season.Â
