Bulls fall in finale at UTSA, 5-3

John Montes homered for the second straight game in Sunday’s rubber match.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (May 12, 2024) – The University of South Florida Bulls (24-27, 10-14 AAC) dropped the rubber match of a three-game series on Sunday, 5-3, in a back-and-forth affair with the UTSA Roadrunners (29-21, 15-9 AAC).

Despite the eight runs scored, UTSA and South Florida combined to go 0-for-24 with runners in scoring position in the ballgame. The Bulls put the tying runs on base in both the eighth and ninth innings, but failed to even the score after relinquishing the lead in the seventh inning.

The Roadrunners plated the first run of the afternoon in the bottom of the first inning, but John Montes (Toa Alto, Puerto Rico) quickly tied the score with his second homer in as many days in the top of the second.

The game remained tied at 1-1 until the Bulls scratched across an unearned run in the top of the sixth inning. Drew Brutcher (Lakeland) walked with one out, moved to second on a base hit by Ben Rozenblum (Coral Springs) and scored on a fielder's choice and error off the bat of Montes.

The Roadrunners answered right back in the bottom of the sixth to knot the score at 2-2 and took the lead for good in the seventh. UTSA pulled in front with a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh and added another tally in the frame on a bases-loaded wild pitch.

USF got one of those runs back in the top of the eighth, but ultimately stranded the tying run on third base before UTSA added an unearned run in the bottom of the frame.

Notable

  • South Florida outhit UTSA in both losses of the series.
  • The Bulls hit five home runs in the three-game series – all five were solo homers.
  • Bobby Boser (Wesley Chapel) extended his hitting streak to a season-best eight straight games. He is batting .500 (13-for-26) with four homers and three doubles over his last seven games.
