USF Men's Basketball Battles Back from 19 Points Down but Drops a Heartbreaker to North Texas

Brandon Stroud recorded a career-high 20 points and tallied a career-high five steals

TAMPA, Fla, Feb. 23, 2025 – Brandon Stroud recorded another career day for the University of South Florida men's basketball team in Sunday's American Athletic Conference contest against North Texas in the Yuengling Center. The Bulls (13-15, 6-9) battled back from being down 19 points but fell 64-57 to the Mean Green (20-6, 11-3).
 
Stroud led all scorers with 20 points. He tied a career-high five steals to go along with nine rebounds, six assists, and one blocked shot. Stroud joined Laquincy Rideau (2019) and David Collins (2019) as the only USF players to record back-to-back games with at least 11 points and have five steals.
 
Jayden Reid finished the game with 11 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Jamille Reynolds posted his eighth double-double with 11 rebounds and 10 points. CJ Brown produced a steal in his 13th straight game, finishing with two steals. He added nine points with two assists and one rebound.
 
North Texas opened the game with an 11-5 run. Midway through the first half, the Mean Green added an 11-0 run and extended their lead to 19, 26-8. USF made it a 14-point game as UNT took a 40-26 lead into the break.
 
North Texas extended its lead to 17, 50-33, its largest of the second half. The Bulls were resilient, battled back, and cut the deficit to two, 53-51, with an 18-3 run. During the run, South Florida held North Texas without a field goal for 7:15. Reynolds scored eight points, while Stroud added five. Brown provided a huge and-1 that forced a UNT timeout.
 
The Bulls initially tied the game at 53-53, but a review of a goaltending call resulted in two points being removed from USF after the goaltending was overturned.
 
North Texas went on to win 64-57. The Bulls held the Mean Green to 28.6 percent shooting and 24 points in the second half, both season lows for North Texas.
 
Key Stats:
• The South Florida defense forced 14 turnovers, which led to 14 fastbreak points.
• The USF bench outscored the North Texas bench 23-16. It is the 22nd time the South Florida bench has outscored their opponent's bench this season.
• The Bulls held the Mean Green to 28.6 percent from the field and 24 points in the second half, both season lows for North Texas.
 
Notables:
Brandon Stroud joined Laquincy Rideau (2019) and David Collins (2019) to record back-to-back games with at least 11 points and have five steals. Stroud finished with a career-high 20 points and tied a career-high with five steals.
CJ Brown has recorded a steal in his 13th straight game. He tied the longest streak by a USF freshman, tying B.B. Waldon's mark set in 1999..
Jamille Reynolds collected his eighth double-double with 11 rebounds and 10 points.
