TAMPA, Fla. (February 6, 2025) –
Jamille Reynolds recorded a career-high 25 points as he produced a double-double to lead the University of South Florida men's basketball team against Temple on Thursday. The Bulls (12-11, 5-5) had four players finish in double figures in their 100-91 double-overtime victory over the Owls (14-9, 6-4) inside the Yuengling Center.
With the game tied at 79-79 and 18 seconds remaining, Temple called a timeout to plan their final shot. The Owls set up Reynolds for an isolation play outside the 3-point arc, and he rose to the occasion. Zion Stanford attempted a shot, but Reynolds delivered a massive block, sending the game into overtime.
Brandon Stroud and
Kobe Knox led the Bulls with four and three points, respectively, in the first overtime. South Florida pulled away from Temple in the second overtime with a 3-pointer from
Jayden Reid and consecutive dunks by Knox. Although they went without a field goal for the final 2:31 of the second overtime, the Bulls relied on six successful free throws to secure a 100-91 victory. The South Florida defense limited Temple to 0-for-6 on the Owls' last six shots.
It was the first time the Bulls played in a double overtime game since December 17, 2013, in a victory over Florida Gulf Coast. It was the first time since January 8, 2023, against Wichita State that two players finished with double-doubles. Reynolds and
Brandon Stroud both recorded double-doubles.
Reynolds led all scorers with 25 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for his sixth double-double. He added a game-high four blocked shots. Knox achieved his 13th game in double figures this season with a 17-point effort. He added six rebounds, four assists, two blocks, and one steal. Stroud notched his first double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds, along with four assists.
Quincy Ademokoya rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 points. He added five rebounds, one assist, and one steal.
CJ Brown recorded a career-high 10 assists, marking the second time in two seasons that the Bulls have had a freshman achieve 10 assists in a game. In last year's season opener,
Jayden Reid also registered 10 assists. Brown concluded the game with eight points, five rebounds, one steal, and one blocked shot, while Reid accounted for nine points, three assists, and three rebounds.
The Bulls opened the game on fire, shooting 85.7 percent from the field and 75.0 percent from 3-point range. Two great passes from Brown led to thunderous dunks from Reynolds and Knox as USF held an early 16-8 lead.
The Bulls and Owls continued to battle. Midway through the first half, Temple came back and tied the game. With South Florida down by two, 33-31,
Jimmie Williams dove onto the ground for a loose ball. He collected the loose ball and sent a no-look pass on his back towards a wide-open Reid. Reid picked up the pass and threw down an emphatic one-handed slam to tie the game 33-33.
USF closed the half on a 7-2 run and took a 44-39 lead into the break. In the opening stanza, South Florida shot 52.9 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from 3-point range. The Bulls combined for 13 assists on 18 made baskets in the first half.
The Bulls and Owls traded baskets to start the second half. With USF leading 49-46, Reynolds recorded the next seven points to extend the lead to 56-49. A few minutes later, Williams scored seven-straight points as USF extended its lead to 66-57. Ademokoya added a dunk after faking a 3-point attempt.
Temple went on a 7-0 run, cutting South Florida's lead to just one point at 72-71 with 4:48 left in regulation, setting the stage for a thrilling finish.
Zion Stanford led the Owls with 23 points. He had six rebounds, four assists, two steals, and one block. Steve Settle III recorded a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Aiden Tobiason chipped in with 14 points. Temple was without the nation's second-leading scorer, Jamal Mashburn Jr., who missed the game.
The USF bench outscored the Temple bench 51-42 as a unit. This marks the 17th time this season that the South Florida bench has outscored its opponents. The Bulls had the advantage in points in the paint (52-42), second-chance points (18-17), and in fastbreak points (21-8). South Florida outrebounded Temple 52-49. The Bulls recorded 26 assists on 37 made field goals, marking the third time this season that USF has achieved 20 or more assists.
At the under-eight media timeout in the first half, the American honored the legacy of Amir Abdur-Rahim.
