USF Men’s Basketball Falls to Wichita State

TAMPA, Fla. (February 6, 2025) – Jamille Reynolds recorded a team-high 18 points for the University of South Florida men's basketball team in an American Athletic Conference matchup with Wichita State. The Bulls (12-12, 5-6) had three players score in double digits but fell to the Shockers (13-10, 3-7), 75-70, inside the Yuengling Center on Sunday.
 
Reynolds notched a team-high 18 points. He also led the team with six rebounds and tied a career-high with five blocked shots. Jimmie Williams finished the game with 12 points and one rebound. Brandon Stroud closed out the double-digit scorers with 11 points. He is eight points away from reaching 1,000 points for his career. He tallied a season-high three blocks, brought down three rebounds, and dished out two assists. CJ Brown produced a game-high six assists. He added eight points, two rebounds, and two steals.
 
The game started as a physical battle. There were two lead changes and two ties in the first eight minutes. Quincy Ademokoya provided a spark with a two-handed slam in traffic. The dunk led to a 7-2 run for the Bulls and a 9-7 lead.
 
With Wichita State leading 18-12, South Florida went on a 9-3 run and tied the game at 21-21. Kameren Wright capped off the run with a corner 3-pointer after elite ball movement led to a wide-open shot.
 
It remained a back-and-forth battle until the four-minute mark. The Bulls created some separation with an 8-0 run. Wright collected a loose ball on the defensive end that started the transition offense with an outlet pass to Brown. Brown found a cutting Wright for the emphatic slam dunk. The Bulls held a 36-30 lead after the run. The Shockers scored the final basket of the opening half, but the Bulls took a 36-32 lead into the break. USF shot 60.9 percent from the field in the first half.
 
The second half started with the two sides trading baskets. Wichita State took a 49-44 lead after holding South Florida without a made field goal for six minutes of game action. The Bulls were unfazed and clawed back. Ademokoya knocked down a 3-pointer, and Reynolds produced two monster dunks as USF cut the deficit to 56-55 with 7:32 left to play in regulation.
 
With 4:45 left on the clock and the score tied at 60-60, the Shockers utilized a 7-1 run and took a 67-61 lead. South Florida was resilient and answered with a 7-2 run. Reynolds accounted for five points, while Stroud added two points as the Bulls cut the deficit to one, 69-68, with one minute left to play. South Florida held Wichita State to no field goals over the final minute, but the Shockers went 6-for-8 from the free-throw line to secure the 75-70 victory.
 
The Bulls outscored the Shockers 30-12 in bench points, 40-36 in points in the paint, and 8-5 in fastbreak points. South Florida dished out 11 assists and limited the Wichita State assists to five, the lowest total for the Shockers this season.
 
Wichita State collected 19 offensive rebounds, which led to 24 second-chance points. Xavier Bell produced a game-high 26 points. He collected five rebounds, two assists, and one steal. Quincy Ballard recorded a double-double behind 12 points and 12 rebounds. Corey Washington added 11 points, eight rebounds, two steals, and one block. Ronnie DeGray III rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points. He had six rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
 
Notables
· The South Florida bench outscored the Wichita State bench 30-12. It is the 18th time this season that the South Florida bench outscored its opponents.
· Jamille Reynolds led USF in scoring for the seventh time this season with 18 points. It was his 14th game scoring in double figures.
· Jimmie Williams produced his sixth game in double figures with a 12-point effort.
· Brandon Stroud scored 11 points, his seventh game in double digits. He is eight points shy of 1,000.
· CJ Brown has led the team in assists in back-to-back games with six against the Shockers.
