USF Men’s Soccer Travels to Mercer Seeking to Extend Unbeaten Run

Bulls look to continue building early-season momentum in Sunday’s nonconference matchup.

TAMPA, Fla., September 6, 2025 – The University of South Florida men's soccer team (2-0-3), coming off a gritty 1–1 draw against UCF, hits the road to face Mercer on Sunday, September 7, at 7:00 p.m. The match will take place at Betts Stadium and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
 
Setting the Stage
USF extended its unbeaten start to the season at Corbett Stadium on Thursday night. The Bulls struck early when Brandon Nyagurungo netted his first goal as a Bull just 3:25 into the match, assisted by João Belmudes. Goalkeeper Jahiem Wickham turned in a standout performance with eight saves, including several in high-pressure moments, to keep the match level.
 
Now, with the nonconference schedule continuing, the Bulls look to build on their strong defensive form and early-season momentum against a Mercer.
 
The Opponent
The Mercer Bears (2-2-1) enters Sunday's match coming off a home victory and will look to carry that momentum into their meeting with USF. Mercer will aim to test USF's defense while defending their home field in Macon.
 
Note-A-Bulls:
  • Wickham's Wall – Goalkeeper Jahiem Wickham continues to be a major force in net, coming off an eight-save performance against UCF.
  • Early Impact  – Brandon Nyagurungo made his mark quickly in the rivalry match, scoring his first goal in green and gold less than four minutes in.

Series History
The Bulls have met the Bears seven total times, including their first match on October 5, 1984, and all seven games were home for the Bulls. USF leads the series history with five wins, one loss, and one draw. This will be the first match between the two on Mercer's home turf in program history.

ABOUT USF MEN'S SOCCER
USF Men's Soccer competed in the school's first-ever intercollegiate athletic contest on Sept. 25, 1965, beating Florida Southern 4-3. Since then, the oldest program on campus has built a winning tradition, claiming 14 conference championships and making 22 NCAA Tournament appearances, including three trips to the Elite Eight.
 
The program also has a strong reputation within the professional game and boasts 30 MLS draft picks.
