TAMPA (August 11, 2026) – The University of South Florida women's soccer team officially opens the 2026 season Wednesday night, traveling across the country to take on Gonzaga at Luger Field. Following the season opener, the Bulls will remain in Washington to take on Washington State on Saturday, Aug. 15.
Setting the Stage
Chris Brown enters his third season at the helm of the Bulls, looking to build on a 2025 campaign that saw South Florida advance to the American Conference Tournament semifinals. The 28-player roster for 2026 features 10 returners and 18 newcomers. Of the team's 10 returners, five recorded 10 or more starts a year ago: midfielders Brooke Fabri and Yui Suetsugu, defenders Ava Rightmire, Elyse Thornton, and Regan Kelly.

Sophia Cabral, Brooke Fabri, and Yui Suetsugu earned recognition on the 2026 American Conference Preseason Watch List, while the Bulls were selected to finish fourth in the conference's preseason coaches' poll. Senior midfielder/forward Yui Suetsugu returns after earning a spot on the American Conference Second Team in 2025. She recorded four points on one goal and two assists while emerging as one of the Bulls' top midfielders. Junior midfielder Brooke Fabri appeared in 15 matches, logging 1,283 minutes while placing four of her seven shots on goal—junior forward Cabral returns after tallying two points on one goal during the 2025 campaign.

The Bulls and Bulldogs will meet for just the second time on Wednesday. South Florida won the only meeting 2-1 on September 24, 2023, in Tampa, Fla.

Chris Brown enters his third season as USF head coach after a record-setting debut in 2024, leading the Bulls to 12 wins and coaching both the American Athletic Conference Midfielder and Goalkeeper of the Year. South Florida produced six all-conference players. He recorded the most wins in a debut season with 12 wins. Brown followed that success by guiding the Bulls to a 9-8-3 overall record and a trip to the American Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinals in 2025, as South Florida earned a first-round tournament victory and secured three selections to the American Athletic Conference Preseason Watch List entering 2026. Brown spent 17 years as associate head coach (2007–2023), helping USF to three American Athletic Conference titles, eight NCAA appearances, and a 10-year streak of 10+ win seasons. He coached USF's first All-American, Evelyne Viens, now a Hall of Famer and Olympic gold medalist, and has developed multiple American Athletic Conference award winners. Players under his guidance hold most of the program's records.
