USF Women's Soccer Drops Season Opener

BOCA RATON, Fla. (Aug. 28, 2005) ? After having its season opener in Miami against Florida International postponed on Friday due to Hurricane Katrina, the University of South Florida women's soccer team ended up kicking off its season on Sunday against Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton, Fla., dropping its first match of the 2005 season, 1-0.

FAU's Susanna Lehtinen scored in the 10th minute, heading the ball into the net off a corner kick by teammate Ashley Mannarino.

Although neither team could put together double-digit numbers in shots, the Owls (2-0) had more scoring opportunities, outshooting the Bulls (0-1) by eight shots. In total, FAU tallied nine shots ? five of which were on goal ? compared to the USF's lone shot by junior Jessica Zabel in the game.

Casey Garrett made her debut as the Bulls' starter between the posts, registering four saves in the game. Although Garrett gave up the early goal, she kept USF in the game, holding FAU scoreless for 80 minutes. However, the Bulls couldn't put together a scoring opportunity.

The Bulls will look to pick up their first win of the season when they return home to face Nicholls State on Saturday at 3 p.m.
