A freekick goal by defender Jay Needham in the 97th minute lead to the University of South Florida men's soccer team's second-straight loss as the SMU Mustangs (2-2-0, 0-0-0 C-USA) defeated the Bulls (1-3-0, 0-0-0 BIG EAST) 2-1 on Sunday, September 11. Playing down a man with five minutes remaining and trailing 1-0, USF battled back to tie the game in the waning moments to send the competition to overtime. However, Needham's game-winner handed USF its third loss of the season. The contest wrapped up the 2005 SMU Radisson Hotel Classic Sunday at Westcott Field on the campus of SMU. Sunday's first game saw New Mexico defeating West Virginia by the score of 2-0, earning the Classic title.
In an evenly played first half, USF and SMU exchanged scoring chances. However, both defenses were up to the challenge. SMU outshot USF 9-6 in the first half as both teams entered intermission tied a 0-0.
In the second half, USF stepped up its defense and made SMU work for every offensive possession. SMU sophomore Scott Corbin gave the Mustangs a 1-0 lead in the 49th minute with a shot past goalkeeper
Dane Brenner. The goal was unassisted. As the half wore on, the physical play by both teams elevated. With nearly five minutes remaining in regulation, USF's
Blake Sharpe was issued a red card, forcing USF to play down a man for the rest of the match. Freshman
Joris Claessens, tied the contest 1-all, heading in a perfect free kick by
Rodrigo Hidalgo in the 89th minute. The goal was the first of Claessens' USF career. Hidalgo was credited with his fourth assist of the season on the goal.
In overtime, SMU's Needham took a 25-yard freekick during the 97th minute. The shot bent into the upper left corner of the net untouched, giving the Mustangs the victory.
With the loss, USF finished the SMU Radisson Hotel Classic with a 0-2-0 record. Freshmen
Jordan Seabrook and
Yohance Marshall were named to the SMU Radisson Classic All-Tournament Team for their play this past weekend.
