MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Friday, Sept. 23) ?
Sammy Castellanos scored his third game-winning goal of the 2005 season to lead the University of South Florida men's soccer team (4-3-0, 3-0-0 BIG EAST) to a 1-0 victory over the West Virginia Mountaineers (4-4-0, 1-2-0 BIG EAST) on Friday, Sept. 23 at Dick Dlesk Stadium. The win was the third-straight for the Bulls, keeping USF perfect in BIG EAST action (3-0-0).
In an evenly matched first half, USF scored the game's only goal in the 45th minute when Castellanos struck a shot past goalkeeper Nick Noble. Sophomore Kris Raad was credited with his fourth assist of the season on the score. With the assist, Raad extends his current point-scoring streak to three games. The Bulls entered halftime with a 1-0 lead, outshooting the Mountaineers 10-6.
During the second half, West Virginia pressured USF, looking to score the equalizer. However, goalkeeper
Dane Brenner and the USF defender shut down the Mountaineer attack, giving the Bulls their first shutout victory of the 2005 season. Brenner, who earned his fourth win of the season, recorded five saves for his ninth-career shutout.
The win is the first road victory for the Bulls this season and snaps four-game losing skid away from the USF Soccer Stadium. The win also keeps USF among the ranks of the unbeaten, having won its first three conference matches. With the victory USF extends its unbeaten streak versus West Virginia to eight games and moves the Bulls' all-time record versus the Mountaineers to 8-2-1.
USF will next travel to Pittsburgh, Pa., to face it's the Pitt Panthers on Sunday, Sept. 25. Game time is 12 p.m. (EST).
