Neaves' Overtime Goal Leads USF To 2-1 Victory of Syracuse
October 15, 2006 | Men's Soccer
TAMPA, Fla. (October 15, 2006) ? A 106th-minute strike by sophomore Kevon Neaves guided the University of South Florida men's soccer team (8-4-3, 4-2-3 BIG EAST) to a 2-1 double-overtime victory over the Syracuse Orange (6-7-1, 1-7-1 BIG EAST) on Sunday, Oct. 15 at the USF Soccer Stadium. Neaves, who was also credited with setting up USF's first goal of the night, recorded his second goal in as many games.
Registering a career-high in points (3 pts. ? 1g, 1a) in a single match, Neaves buried a bending free kick from 23 yards out to give the Bulls their third-straight home victory. With a Syracuse wall standing between the Petit Valley, Trinidad, native and the goal, a bending shot towards the near goal post ending the match in the 106th minute, earning the Bulls a spot in the 2006 BIG EAST Championship. The goal was the second of the season for Neaves.
Following a scoreless first half, USF broke the 0-0 tie with a score in the 46th minute. Sophomore Jason Devenish scored his first goal of the season with an early second-half strike. Neaves and Kris Raad were credited with assists on the goal. For Neaves it was his fourth assist of the season and for Raad it increased his team leading total to six.
Syracuse tied the game in the 63rd minute when Hansen Woodruff scored his sixth goal of the season as the Orange's leading scorer battled his way through the USF defense.
Goalkeeper Dane Brenner notched his eighth win of the season and 35th of his career, making two saves on the night.
The win is the first-ever for USF over Syracuse and ties the series history at 1-all.
The Bulls will host the Louisville Cardinals in the final regular season home match of 2006 on Wednesday, Oct. 18. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
