TAMPA, Fla. (Feb. 25, 2006) ?University of South Florida pitcher Bree Spence threw a one-hitter complete-game shutout and led the Bulls to a 2-0 victory against Indiana in day two of the Louisville Slugger Invitational at the USF Softball Field. With the win, USF advances to the championship game against Siena on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
A day after Indiana starting pitcher Mariangee Bogado struck out 23 USF batters in a 1-0 10-inning win for the Hoosiers, the Bulls returned the favor as Spence (4-0) tallied her second one-hitter of the year. Spence stifled batters, striking out seven while not allowing a walk in her fourth win of the season.
The Bulls (9-6) got on the board first, scoring all the runs they needed in the top of the second, 2-0. Freshman Britta Giddens led off the inning with a double to left field. Ashley Bullion laid down a bunt, scoring the runner from second because the throw to first hit Bullion in the back and ended up in right field. With Bullion at second base, Samantha Ray came up to bat and hit a grounder to third baseman Jennilee Huddleston, who overthrew the first baseman, scoring Bullion.
In the bottom of the third Indiana (2-3-1) had a scoring opportunity after an error and a single put runners at the corners with two outs. With only needing a hit to cut the lead in half, USF pitcher Spence struck out the batter to end the opportunity.
