TAMPA, Fla. (April 13, 2006) ? The University of South Florida baseball team (16-19, 6-7 BIG EAST) scored 11 runs on 15 hits to defeat the Louisville Cardinals (15-19, 6-4 BIG EAST), 11-6, on Thursday, April 13 at Red McEwen Field. Junior Casey Hudspeth struck out six Louisville batters to earn his 20th-career victory, becoming the 12th player in USF history to record 20-or-more win for a career.
Hudspeth, who was making his 10th start of the 2006 season, lasted seven innings, scattering six hits while facing 30 batters. The win moved the Sarasota, Fla., native to 4-4 on the year with team-leading 68 strikeouts on the year. Sophomore Ryan Lau and junior Chase Lirette combined for two innings of relief, allowing one run on two hits in the final two frames of the contest.
Six Bulls registered multiple-hit games versus the Cardinals. Junior Ty Taborelli scored three runs in a 2-for-3 performance while freshman Braulio Pardo drove in two runs and scored another, batting 2-for-4 on the night. Senior Kris Howell went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored, including his fourth double of the season. Right fielder Joey Angelberger and third baseman Dexter Butler each went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Second baseman Nick Cardieri drove in a run, hitting 2-for-4 versus Louisville.
RBI-singles by Howell and Cardieri along with a sacrifice fly by Angelberger gave USF an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. The Bulls added two runs in the bottom of the second to extend their lead to 5-0. An error by third baseman Logan Johnson allowed two USF runs to score and give the Bulls a five-run lead.
Louisville answered with two runs in the top of the third to cut USF's lead to 5-2. A single by Chris Cates brought home two runs for the Cardinals, making it a two-run game.
USF added to its lead on a base-on-balls with the bases loaded. The run gave USF a 6-2 advantage in the bottom of the fourth.
Louisville made it a one-run game, scoring three in the top of the sixth. However, the Bulls tacked on five combined runs in the seventh and eighth innings to open up the game, 11-5. Louisville scored a run in the top of the ninth, but it was not enough as USF defeated the Cardinals, 11-6.
The win snapped a six-game losing skid in BIG EAST play for the Bulls and was the team's first home win during the month of April.
USF will continue its three-game series with Louisville on Friday April 14. On the mound for the Bulls will be sophomore Daniel Thomas. Getting the start for the Cardinals will be left-hander Jake Smith. First pitch is 7 p.m.
