Tampa, Fla. (April 21, 2006) ? The No. 5 seed USF men's tennis team defeated No. 4 seed St. John's Red Storm, 4-3, Friday afternoon at the USF P.E. Courts.
The Bulls jumped to an early lead on the Red Storm by taking the critical doubles point. Clinching the point for USF was senior Juan Barragan and walk-on senior Raj Shah who narrowly defeated SJU's Claudio Halim and Morgan Bauer, 9-8 (4).
In singles competition, USF and St. John's traded blows until the match was all knotted up at 3-3. The deciding match came down to USF sophomore Dillon Brozyna at the No. 4 singles spot. He took care of SJU's Alex Svetklakou in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5.
This match marks USF first victory against a BIG EAST opponent.
The Bulls now move on to the semifinals of the BIG EAST Tennis Tournament where they will play the winner of the Notre Dame vs. Georgetown match. The match will take place Saturday at Noon, at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts.
