TAMPA, Fla. (September 15, 2006) ? A late goal by junior Simon Schoendorf led the University of South Florida men's soccer team (4-2-1, 2-0-1 BIG EAST) to a 2-2 draw with the No. 8-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers (5-0-2, 2-0-1 BIG EAST) on Friday, Sept. 15 at the USF Soccer Stadium.
Schoendorf registered his second goal of the season, finding the back of the net in the 87th minute, to give USF its first-ever tie in BIG EAST play. Sophomore Jordan Seabrook redirected a low cross by Kevon Neaves, to an unmarked Schoendorf at the edge of the six-yard box. The Karlsruhe, Germany, native took a shot near post to tie the game at 2-all. Both Neaves and Seabrook were credited with assists on the play.
USF scored the first goal of the game on an 18-yard free kick by junior Rodrigo Hidalgo. From the edge of the 18-yard box, Hidalgo bent a shot to the upper right 90 on the Mountaineer goal, beating WVU goalkeeper Nick Noble to make the score 1-0 in the eighth minute. The goal was the second of the season for the USF midfielder.
West Virginia battled back, scoring two goals in one minute. Reed Cooper converted a corner kick opportunity sent in by Dan Stratford in the 32nd minute to tie the game 1-1. The Mountaineers took a 2-1 lead with Jyler Noviello's second goal of the season in the 33rd minute. On a restart, Stratford sent a ball towards the edge of USF penalty area. Andy Wright headed the cross towards the Bulls' net, which Noviello redirected with his head for the score.
Goalkeeper Dane Brenner, who tied a season-high with six saves, recorded his first draw of the 2006 season and the sixth of his career.
USF held a slight edge in shots, 19-16, with the Mountaineers striking the ball on frame one more time than the Bulls, 8-7.
With the tie, USF remains in first place of the Red Division. It also moves USF's record versus ranked opponents this season to 1-1-1.
The overtime contest proved to be the 100th all-time in USF history. It also was the second-straight BIG EAST opener at the USF Soccer Stadium which went into overtime.
USF will continue BIG EAST play at home, hosting the Pittsburgh Panthers on Sunday, Sept. 17 at 1 p.m.
