Durham, N.C. (Sept. 3, 2006) ? The University of South Florida men's soccer team (2-2-0) suffered a 1-0 loss to the No. 9-ranked Duke Blue Devils (4-0-0) on Sunday, Sept. 3 at the Duke/adidas Classic in Durham, N.C.
Duke's Mike Grella scored the game's only goal with a strike in the 26th minute to give the Blue Devils a 1-0 advantage. Michael Videira was credited with his second assist of the season on the goal.
USF produced three good chances to tie the game in the first half, including a header by Yohance Marshall and two shots by Sammy Castellanos. However, the Bulls were unable to find the back of the net, being shut out for the first time this season.
Goalkeeper Dane Brenner was dealt his second loss of the season, registering three saves on the night. USF's defense held the Blue Devils to just five shots on goal during the match, keeping one of the nation's most explosive offenses to just on score. Entering the match, Duke had scored 12 goals in its first three matches of the season.
The Bulls were forced to play a man down for nearly 30 minutes, following a red card to midfielder Kevon Neaves in the 59h minute.
The shut out was the first one suffered by the Bulls since falling to Connecticut, 1-0, in the BIG EAST Championship Game last season (Nov. 13, 2005).
With the loss, USF finished the Duke/adidas Classic with a 1-1-0 record, defeating N.C. State, 2-0, on Friday. Three Bulls were named to the all-tournament team ? Brenner, Kareem Smith and Simon Schoendorf.
USF will open BIG EAST play with a road match at Notre Dame on Friday, Sept. 8. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
