TAMPA, Fla. (February 19, 2007) ? The University of South Florida men's tennis team wrapped up a two-match weekend the right way on Sunday, defeating Florida Atlantic 5-2 to end a five match losing streak and give head coach Don Barr the 200th win of his career.
“The monkey is off my back,” Barr joked following the victory. “We've been struggling to get it. Now I'm just thinking of all the teams that have helped me get here.”
The match featured several lineup changes that proved beneficial as the Bulls (2-5) started off by capturing the doubles point for the first time since the season opener against Stetson. Thomas Estrada and Mahmoud Hamed, who usually see action from the No. 2 doubles spot, got the start at No. 1 and knocked off the Owls' (2-7) Eddie Majcher and Daniel Vardag 8-2. Henning Hipp and Daniel Daudt captured the point with an 8-4 victory over Olivier Sajous and Lawrence Harradine at No. 2.
Hipp also moved down to the third singles position, instead of No. 1, and was able to get past Vardag 6-3, 7-5. Estrada capped his weekend with flawless play in both singles and doubles action, defeating J.P. Bounassar 6-3, 6-3 in Sunday's action.
Barr will begin his run at 250 wins when he leads USF against visiting Illinois State, Fri., Feb. 23 at 2 p.m. Admission to the USF Varsity Tennis Courts is free.
