TAMPA, Fla. (February 9, 2007) ? Freshmen Thomas Estrada and Diego Toledo fought hard in singles play to take both of their matches, but it was not enough as No. 11 Miami swept the first five points to claim the match 5-2, Friday afternoon at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts.
Toledo needed a tiebreak in the second set to keep his undefeated singles streak alive, as he edged UM's Barnabas Carrega 6-2, 7-6(6) in the No. 6 spot. The Florianopolis, Brazil native has a 4-0 record so far in the dual season.
Estrada dropped his first set to Hector Nieto 3-6 in the fifth position, but bounced back to claim wins in the second and third, 6-2 and 6-1, for USF's only other point.
The Hurricanes (3-1) swept all three doubles matches to open play and then took the top three flights in singles play to send the Bulls (1-3) to their third straight loss and third against a ranked opponent.
The men's tennis team will look to end the streak Sun., Feb. 11 at noon when it welcomes No. 43 Auburn back to the Varsity Tennis Courts. The Tigers are making their second trip in a month to Tampa, having competed in the USF Spring Invitational, held in January.
Admission to the USF Varsity Tennis Courts is free.
