TAMPA, Fla. (April 3, 2007) ? Senior Ty Taborelli was 2-for-2 with four RBI in the University of South Florida's 11-4 victory over Central Florida Tuesday night at Red McEwen Field.
Seven Bulls tallied two hits in the game and three players had two or more RBI in USF's 23rd win of the season.
Freshman right handed pitcher Matt Quevedo earned his third win of the season after striking out two and allowing one earned run in 6.1 innings. Freshman Shawn Sanford picked up his eighth save of the year, allowing five hits and one run in 2.1 innings.
Junior shortstop Walter Diaz extended his hitting streak to 14 games in his 2-hit outing while senior Nick Cardieri and junior Joey Angelberger were both 2-for-3 with two RBI.
After three scoreless frames, the Bulls broke open a five-run inning in the bottom of the fourth, collecting four hits along the way.
Sophomore third baseman Addison Maruszak was hit by a pitch for the 16th time this season to start the inning, then stole second to move into scoring position. Cardieri singled up the middle, scoring the Bulls' first run of the game. Angelberger doubled down the left field line to bring Cardieri across the plate and tally his 17th RBI of the season.
Consolmagno improved his on base percentage to .588 for the season after being hit by a pitch, placing runners on first and third as Diaz stepped to the plate. Diaz proceeded to singled through the left side, scoring Angelberger. Diaz stole second base, his 12th of the season, in time for Taborelli to single to right field, notching two RBI on the hit.
In the sixth, UCF scored one run off of one hit then added two more in the seventh, drawing the margin to two runs, 5-3.
After 6.1 innings of work, Quevedo was relieved by junior left hander James Rowe, who forced one batter to fly out to left field before being relieved by Sanford. Sanford allowed two hits in the Golden Knights' two-run inning.
The Bulls answered with a six-run inning of their own, increasing USF's lead to 11-3 after seven innings.
After Taborelli walked, junior Dexter Butler singled to right field and Maruszak reached on an error by the pitcher. Junior Brandin Daniel reached on a base-hit bunt and Cardieri singled up the middle to notch his 12th RBI of the year. Angelberger then sent a fly ball to center field, scoring Maruszak before Pardo's base hit to right field scored Daniel.
Junior Mike Consolmagno singled to the left side loading the bases for Taborelli. Taborelli blasted a shot to the right side, scoring two runs for USF and extending the lead to eight.
After the Golden Knights scored off of a bases loaded walk in the eighth, USF held UCF scoreless in the final stanza to earn the 11-4 victory.
The Bulls return to Red McEwen this weekend for a three-game series with West Virginia. The BIG EAST match up will begin Thursday at 6 p.m., followed by a 6 p.m. Friday night game and will wrap up with a 1 p.m. contest on Saturday.
