BOX SCORE
TAMPA, Fla. ? USF junior midfielder Zak Boggs tallied a golden goal in the fifth minute of overtime to give the 11th-ranked Bulls a 1-0 win over No. 8 Louisville in front of 2,192 fans Friday night at USF Soccer Stadium.
The win, which was nationally televised on Fox Soccer Channel, moved USF to 5-1-1in the BIG EAST Red Division and into sole possession of first place. USF is a half game ahead of St. John's (4-1-1) who plays Saturday at home vs. Villanova. The Bulls are 7-2-2 overall as Louisville fell to 9-2-2 overall and 4-2-1 in conference play.
Senior Jordan Seabrook and junior Jorge Mora strategically found the open Boggs in the 95th minute, who cut the ball back on the Cardinal defender and beat the UofL goalkeeper from 16-yards out with a right-footed blast. It was the third goal of the year for Boggs.
“We had to be patient,” said Boggs. “I saw Seabrook get the ball and turn, I knew he may pass it off to me and he did. I was ready, took a touch and then struck it.”
“I was relieved because we were getting tired out there,” said Seabrook on his pass to Boggs. “It was good our work paid off for us. We have been training and working hard for weeks and months and took a tough loss on Tuesday. To come out here and show the whole country on national television that we have the talent and determination to show well against one of the best teams in the country.”
Sophomore goalkeeper Jeff Attinella improved his record to 6-1-1 after making six stops on the night, including a first half Louisville penalty kick. In the 36th minute, after a foul by USF in the penalty box, Attinella made a diving save to his right on the PK that would keep the game scoreless.
“I thought Jeff saving the PK was big for the team,” said USF head coach George Kiefer. “He commanded the box in the air and took away a lot of Louisville's restarts. He had a good game.”
Fernando Gonzalez, Jason Devenish and Mora would each fire a shot before the half but were unable to put one through.
“I think it was a big win but more importantly how we played on T.V.,” said Kiefer. “I thought we were very patient with the ball and that was for a reason. I think it paid off because they (Louisville) started to get tired at the end of the game. Louisville has won their last four overtime games. For Zak to score the goal after he had been hitting the posts and just missing some shots. But he is a true goal scorer and I think that is going to break the ice for him where he will start to hit a few more."
Kiefer was also happy with the play of his bench.
“Sebastian Thuriere came off the bench when we need another guy in the air," said Kiefer. "He hasn't played a lot all year but gave us a good solid 25 minutes today. He is going to be a big time player for this program.”
The Bulls outshot the Cardinals 13-9, including the only three shots taken in overtime. Louisville had six shots on goal and USF five.
USF will play in non-conference action against in-state foe UCF in Orlando on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m.
