USF vs. UIC Box | 2008 Updated Season Statistics
TUCSON, Ariz. ? The University of South Florida softball team bounced back from a tough first day of the Hillenbrand Tournament by defeating the University of Illinois-Chicago Flames, 5-2 on Saturday morning.
After scoring five runs in their previous six games, the green and gold broke out and scored five runs and had a season-high 11 hits.
Senior Courtney Mosch was impressive against UIC, scattering seven hits and giving up two unearned runs over seven innings pitched. She struck out three batters en route to her sixth victory of the year.
The Bulls (9-7) jumped out to their first lead of the tournament when, in the bottom of the third, junior Britta Giddens popped a seeing-eye single between the center fielder and second baseman scoring senior Aya Nakajima.
Mosch then ripped a double to left center scoring freshman Kelly McCarver and Giddens to give the Bulls a 3-0 lead. Mosch's double was USF's fifth consecutive hit of the inning.
Mosch helped her own cause in the fifth by crushing an opposite-field home run over the right center field wall. The home run was her second on the season and the 15th of her career.
USF was aggressive on the base paths all game, going a perfect 5-5 in stolen bases. All of the free swipes came on the first pitch of the next at bat.
The Bulls return to the field at 1 p.m. EST against the New Mexico State Aggies. USF is a perfect 4-0 all-time against the Aggies, including a 10-9 victory on Feb. 15, 2002 in the two school's most recent meeting.
