TAMPA ? The University of South Florida softball team (18-8) recorded a season-high 15 hits and freshman pitcher Capri Catalano struck out 10 as the Bulls defeated Boston University, 7-2, on Wednesday at the Spring Break Tournament in Tampa.
“I can't say enough about our slappers,” head coach
Ken Eriksen said. “They are really getting things done for us by taking off the pressure of our defense.
“If we get people on base we'll make things happen and these girls are doing that for us.”
Freshman
Kelly McCarver scored three runs, a season high among all Bulls' hitters, and went 3-for-4 on the night. USF scored runs in the first, second, sixth and seventh innings and McCarver plated runs in the latter three stanzas.
Senior outfielder
Kit Dunbar put USF on the board in the first inning after advancing to third on a
JoJo Medina single and then scoring on illegal pitch by Boston starter Megan Currier. Moments later Medina would score on a RBI single by Allison Savarese.
Britta Giddens put USF ahead 3-0 in the second inning with an RBI double that brought home McCarver.
Giddens' picked up a second RBI in the top of the sixth on a bunt that scored senior
Aya Nakajima and began three run rally. Medina followed later in the frame with a bases loaded single that knocked the pitcher's glove off her hand and allowed McCarver to score her second run. Senior
Courtney Mosch drew a walk with bases loaded that pushed Giddens home to make the score 6-1.
The final run of the game was plated on a
Kendall Arnold double that pushed the Bulls final total to seven runs and accounted for McCarver's third run scored.
Catalano picked up her fourth win of the season. The New Jersey native only allowed two runs on three hits and struck out 10 Terriers' batters over 6.1 innings of work.
