TAMPA, Fla. - Freshman right-handed pitcher Randy Fontanez struck out seven Georgetown Hoyas to lead the University of South Florida baseball team to a 2-1 victory Friday night at Red McEwen Field.
In his longest outing of the season, Fontanez faced only four over the minimum through eight innings, allowing one run from four hits.
"Randy did awesome," said head coach Lelo Prado. "He gets better every time out. I said from day one that he was going to be a great college pitcher. He threw 95 pitches and only gave up three hits, he said he felt great."
Senior David Torcise came in for a third of an inning in the ninth, forcing one Hoya to ground out, then sophomore Shawn Sanford picked up his fifth save of the season by striking out two batters to end the game.
The Bulls collected three of their five overall hits in the first four at bats, as junior Addison Maruszak doubled to right center to start off the game for USF. Maruszak scored as senior Joey Angelberger sent a sacrifice fly to center field to pick up his 13th RBI of the season. Freshman Ryan Lockwood and junior Brandon Smith each singled, then junior Brian Hobbs reached on a fielder's choice, which scored the Bulls' second run of the game.
The Bulls return to Red McEwen Field for the second outing of the three-game BIG EAST series with Georgetown Saturday at 7 p.m., then take the field at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
