TAMPA, Fla. - The University of South Florida baseball team lost, 6-3, to the Georgetown Hoyas Saturday night at Red McEwen Field.
The Bulls' BIG EAST Conference record falls to 4-4, and overall record dips to 14-13. The Georgetown Hoyas improve to 2-6 in conference play and 9-13 overall.
USF scored a run in the second, then two more in the sixth, but in the seventh, Georgetown tallied six runs from three hits and four walks, edging the Bulls 6-3 in the game.
In the second game of the weekend series, the Bulls were powered by the bats of juniors Addison Maruszak and Chris Rey, and the arm of sophomore Matt Quevedo.
Quevedo, who made his sixth start of the season, retired 10 consecutive Hoyas after giving up a leadoff hit. The streak was ended in the fourth after giving up a two-out walk, but struck out the next batter to end the inning. Quevedo fanned five in his 6.1 innings pitched, giving up two hits, walking three and allowing two earned runs. Through six innings, Quevedo faced one batter over the minimum.
The Bulls' offense struck early in the second with two singles and a stolen base. USF led off with Rey, who struck out, but reached first on a wild pitch. Rey then stole second and was moved over by junior teammate Trey Manz. Rey scored on a single up the middle by freshman Jonathan Koscso.
In the sixth, the Bulls pushed across two more runs, the first on a hard-hit ball by Manz that scored junior Eric Baumann. Maruszak then singled down the left field line to score Rey and give USF the 3-0 lead.
After GU scored six runs, junior Daniel Thomas came in for relief in the top of the seventh, his first relief appearance of the season. Thomas took the mound with runners on the corners, but forced a shallow pop up to right, then struck out a Hoya to end the seventh.
Sophomore Shawn Sanford came in to close in the ninth, allowing no runs from two hits and struck out one.
The Bulls, who have been plunked a total of 56 times ? three of which came in tonight's game ? lead the NCAA in the category.
The Bulls go on to face the Hoyas tomorrow for the series finale at Red McEwen Field at 1 p.m. The Bulls will look to freshman right-hander Derrick Stultz to finish off the Hoyas for the series win.
The Hoyas are expected to throw senior right-hander Erick Chandler.
The game is also Season Ticket Holder Sunday, were all season ticket holders will receive a drink, hot dog and snack item for only $5 when their ticket stub is presented to the concession stand.
