LOUISVILLE, Ky. ? Britta Giddens' two-RBI home run sent the University of South Florida past Louisville, 2-1, on Friday afternoon at Ulmer Stadium.
With the win, the Bulls move into Saturday's BIG EAST Championship Final against No. 2 seed DePaul at 5 p.m. in Louisville, Ky.
Down 1-0 and with two outs in the top of the sixth, the junior shortstop jacked a home run over the right field fence.
Tara Toscano, who reached first on an infield single and advanced on
Kit Dunbar's sacrifice bunt, scored the other run.
“All year long we preached about being close in ball games near the end of the year,” head coach
Ken Eriksen said. “Our pitching staff did a fabulous job of holding a very potent Louisville offense to one run.
“It was a very good ball game and we were fortunate to have such a timely hit.”
Louisville broke the scoreless game in the bottom of the fifth when Kassie Stanfill's triple scored Colby Wherry to take a 1-0 lead.
Relief pitcher
Capri Catalano was awarded the win to improve to 17-1 for the season. Starter
Courtney Mosch held the Cardinals scoreless through three innings.
Catalano held the Cardinals, who out-hit the Bulls 9-4, to just one hit in the last two innings.
Kristen Wadwell took the loss for the Cardinals falling to 18-13.
Giddens' six home runs this season double her career total. The Bartow, Fla., native had three in 2006 and three in 2007.
The Bulls split a doubleheader with DePaul on April 18, at the USF Softball Field. USF dropped game one, 3-6, and defeated the Blue Demons, 5-1, in the nightcap.
