TAMPA ? Playing only singles matches due to impending weather, the No. 55 University of South Florida women's tennis team fell to visiting No. 26 Florida State by a score of 6-0 at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts, Sunday afternoon.
In the No. 1 slot, No. 121 Jessica Zok dropped straight sets to the 35th ranked Katie Rybakova, 6-1, 6-4 and in the No. 2 tilt Jessica Sweeting fell to No. 53 Federica Suess, 6-3, 6-2.
In the 3 position, Iciri Rai couldn't handle Lauren Macfarlane and fell 6-3, 6-4. Playing in the No. 4, Natalia Guevara could not keep the momentum of her singles win against Furman going, falling 6-3, 6-4 to Ania Rynarzewska.
Junior Lauren Shumate moved up to the No. 5 position after her win in the Furman match, but could not make it two in a row as she retired in the second set down, 3-0, after dropping the first set 6-3 to Florida State's Jessica Sucupira. The last match of the day to complete was the No. 6 slot. After dropping a tough first set, 7-5, Allyn Mueller fell to Bonny Davidson, 6-3 in the second to close out the afternoon.
With the loss, USF falls to 0-4 on the season. The Bulls will go on the road in search of their first victory of the season when they travel to Richmond, Va. to take on Virginia Commonwealth on Sunday, February 22 starting 10 a.m.. Following next Sunday's tilt, the Bulls will have a quick turnaround and return home to welcome Eastern Michigan the following day at 2 p.m. at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts.
