TAMPA- Looking for their sixth straight victory, the No. 27 University of South Florida men's tennis team could not outlast Louisiana State University as the Bulls fell 4-3 at Robinson Stadium in Baton Rouge, La. Wednesday evening.
The Bulls fell behind 1-0 as the Bulls could only muster up one victory out of the three doubles tilts. The Bulls lone doubles came from the No. 2 duo of sophomore Jamal Adderley and Mahmoud Hamed as they would defeat Sebastian Carlsson and Julien Gauthier. Today's match was the first time in four matches that the Bulls did not win the doubles point.
Heading into singles action down 1-0, USF needed four wins to claim the dual. The Bulls came close but could only manage a split of the six singles matches. The Bulls would not go down without a fight though.
The Bulls three victories would come from three of their hottest players. It would be Adderley evening the score at one with a straight set victory over Julien Gauthier, 6-4, 6-3. Adderley has now won five of his last six matches and is now 8-4 in dual matches.
The Bulls would then take a 3-2 lead as Hamed would even the score two with his seventh straight singles victory in the form of a three set victory over James Cluskey, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 followed by freshman No. 95 Wael Kilani's come from behind three set victory. Tunis, Tunisia native has now won six straight and is now 11-3 in dual matches.
With the score tied at three, Bulls No. 1, sophomore Lucas Jovita could not complete his comeback against the nation's ninth ranked singles player. Jovita dropped the first set 6-3, to Michael Venus then stormed backed to take the second 6-4 but did not have enough in the tank to complete the upset bid as he fell 6-1 in the third set.
With the loss, USF fall to 9-5 on the season and had their five match winning streak squashed. The Bulls will now return home to the USF Varsity Tennis Courts Thursday, March 26 when they host No. 64 New Mexico State at 2 p.m.
