Fontanez Selected to All-Ping! Baseball Team

TAMPA - University of South Florida Friday night starting pitcher Randy Fontanez is one of 125 baseball players selected to the All-Ping!Baseball Team, a listing of the top one percent of collegiate players in the country.

The sophomore recorded a 3.09 overall ERA, allowing only 34 earned runs in 99.0 innings on the hill. He won seven of his 13 starts and pitched six complete games. Fontanez struck out 57 hitters and held opponents to a .250 batting average.

Fontanez posted a league-best 2.69 ERA in BIG EAST games this season. Fontanez was also third in wins (6) and opposing batting average (.229) and tied for fourth in batters struck out looking with 15 in BIG EAST play. He registered a quality start in seven of his eight league starts, pitching only 5.0 innings in the eighth game. Fontanez, who had four league complete games, pitched at least 7.0 innings in six games, posting a 1.80 ERA in those games. He had three BIG EAST complete game wins. In his three 9.0-inning complete games, he allowed five earned runs while in his 8.0-inning outing he only gave up one earned run on two hits. He ended the year with six wins, and his only loss came in a 2-0, two-hitter at UConn.

With more than 300 Division I college baseball teams and approximately 30 players per ball club, Fontanez is one of the 125 players chosen from 9,000 candidates.

Fontanez is one of seven BIG EAST players selected to the Ping! listing. Two schools had a pair of players getting nods in third baseman Chris Dominguez (1st team) and pitcher Justin Marks (2nd) from Louisville and shortstop Jedd Gyorko (2nd) and second baseman Vince Belnome (honorable mention) from West Virginia. Pittsburgh's second baseman Chris Sedon (2nd) and Notre Dame outfielder A.J. Pollock (3rd) were also listed on the national teams.

The three teams are chocked full of conference players of the year, potential first round draft picks, league leaders and very possibly, future MLB Hall of Famers.
