TAMPA- The University of South Florida volleyball team fell to in-state foe Florida Gulf Coast University in straight sets on Thursday night to drop to 10-15 on the year.
The Bulls could not contain the Eagle offense in the Bulls' final non-conference home game of the season, as FGCU hit .413 as a team, collecting 49 kills on the night.
USF hit .260 as a team, recording 42 kills, while outblocking Florida Gulf Coast 5.0 to 2.0 in the match.
The Bulls were led once again by senior Allie Boaz, who had 15 kills for the sixth consecutive match, after earning her fifth BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll nod earlier in the week. The senior rightside hitter added five digs in the loss.
Kamika Rozier had a productive night offensively for USF, collecting eight kills, while hitting a team high .421 on the night. Rozier also led the way in blocks, as the junior outside hitter picked up three block assists in the match.
The Bulls were without their libero, Janice Rivera, who was sidelined with a concussion that she suffered during practice earlier in the week. In her absence, seven Bulls collected at least four digs, led by senior Christine Knoechel, who picked up nine on the night.
The start at libero for Knoechel was the senior's first ever start at that position.
The match started off well for the Bulls, as they stormed out to an early 5-1 lead, but Florida Gulf Coast stuck around, and forced the opening set into extra points, with the Eagles finally prevailing 28-26.
It was more of the same in set number two, as USF got out to a 10-4 lead, but FGCU used a 21-6 run to take the set 25-16, and the 2-0 set lead heading into the locker room.
In set number three, the Bulls came out flat, and seemed down from the beginning, digging themselves a 10-5 lead, and were never able to close the gap, falling 25-18 in the final frame, and losing the match in straight sets.
USF will be back in action on Sunday afternoon, as they look to fight their way into the BIG EAST Championships, when they take on Villanova at 2 p.m. in the Corral.
