TAMPA- The University of South Florida women's tennis team competed in its second straight home match on Saturday against the University of Memphis.
Senior Allyn Mueller and freshman Ecaterina Vasenina started out the day for the Bulls with a win. Mueller and Vasenina took on Amanda Brown and Andrea Arques-Garcia in the flight two doubles spot. Mueller and Vasenina downed Brown and Arques-Garcia 8-2.
Junior Irene Rehberger and senior Melissa Koning kept the momentum going for the Bulls in their flight one doubles match against Ashley Murdock and Marjorie Ondeck. Rehberger and Koning proved to be too much for Murdock and Ondeck and beat them 8-2, which gave the Bulls the 1-0 lead heading into singles matches.
Senior Lauren Shumate and redshirt sophomore Janette Bejlkova also competed in doubles action for the Bulls in the flight three doubles spot against Kelly Gray and Courtney Collins. This was a good battle between the two teams and both teams gave it everything they had. Bejlkova and Shumate went up 7-2 in the match before letting Gray and Collins sneak back in and make it 7-5. Shumate and Bejlkova would go on to win the next game, though, which gave Bejlkova and Shumate the 8-5 victory over Gray and Collins.
Junior Natalia Guevara started out singles competition for USF with a win in her flight six singles match against Gray. Guevara took down Gray in two sets 6-0, 6-0.
Rehberger picked up the Bulls third point of the day in her flight one singles match against Murdock. Rehberger took care of Murdock in two sets 6-0, 6-1.
Bejlkova helped seal the win for the Bulls in her flight four singles match against Brown. Bejlkova rolled past Brown in two sets 6-1, 6-1 which gave USF the fourth and final point they needed to pick up the win over Memphis.
Zok also picked up a win for the Bulls on Saturday in her flight five singles match against Arques-Garcia. Zok beat Arques-Garcia 6-3, 6-1.
Vasenina picked up the Bulls fifth singles win in her flight three singles match against Ondeck. Vasenina won the first set 6-1. Both players continued to fight hard in the second set but Vasenina would pick up the second set as well 6-2.
Koning closed things out for the Bulls on Saturday in her flight two singles match against Collins. Koning picked up the first set 6-2 and Collins would go on to pick up the second set 6-4 which set the match into a tiebreaker set. It was a back fourth battle between the two players in the tiebreaker set but it would be Koning who would pick up the 10-6 win.
The Bulls will be back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 24, when they travel to Orlando to take on the Central Florida Knights.
