TAMPA- The University of South Florida men's tennis team competed against No. 18 Florida State on Saturday and the Seminoles ended up sweeping the Bulls 7-0.
Sophomore Yannick Yoshizawa and sophomore Wael Kilani started things out for USF on Saturday in their flight two doubles match against Jean Yves-Aubone and Clint Bowles. Yoshizawa and Kilani kept things close between Aubone and Smith but in the end Yoshizawa and Kilani lost 8-5.
Freshman Peter Frank and senior Thomas Estrada competed in the flight one doubles spot against No. 31 Vahid Mirzadeh and Connor Smith. Frank and Estrada were downed by Mirzadeh and Smith 8-2 and with the win that gave the Seminoles the 1-0 lead heading into singles matches.
Junior Jamal Adderley and sophomore Mark Oljaca also competed in doubles action for the Bulls in the flight three doubles spot against Andres Bucaro and Anderson Reed. This match proved to be nail bitter with both teams battling it out till the very end. When it was all said and done, though, Adderley and Oljaca fell to Bucaro and Reed 9-8 (7-5).
Frank started out singles competition for the Bulls on Saturday in his flight two singles match against No. 27 Aubune. Frank fell to Aubone in two sets 6-1, 6-0.
Kilani competed in the flight one singles spot for the Bulls against No. 111 Mirzadeh. Kilani also lost in two sets 6-2, 6-1 which gave FSU their third point of the day.
Adderley continued singles competition for the Bulls in his flight three singles match against Bowles. Bowles downed Adderley 6-3, 6-3 and that gave FSU the fourth and final point that they needed to pick up the win over USF.
Yoshizawa also competed in singles competition for the Bulls in his flight five singles match against Jordan Kelly-Houston. Yoshizawa lost to Houston 6-1, 6-4.
Oljaca competed in the flight four singles spot against Smith. Oljaca fell to Smith in two sets 6-4, 6-3.
Estrada closed out singles competition for USF in his flight six singles match against Bucaro. Estrada picked up the first set against Bucaro 6-2 but then lost the second set 6-4, which sent the match into a tiebreaker set. Estrada lost to Bucaro in the tiebreaker set 10-4.
With the loss the No. 42 Bulls fall to 1-4 on the season. USF will be back in action on Friday, February 12 when they host the University of Texas-San Antonio.
