TAMPA - Pittsburgh hit an RBI single in the 10th inning and the Bulls (20-21 overall, 5-5 BIG EAST) wasted a solid effort by freshman pitcher
Lindsey Richardson as the Panthers (23-17, 7-5) defeated the University of South Florida softball team, 1-0, in 10 innings in the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon.
Richardson (10-5) took the loss, hurling a career high 9.1 innings. The righty struck out nine, scattering seven hits while giving up the lone run of the game.
Cory Berliner (11-5) went the distance for Pitt as she tossed the complete game, surrendering seven hits, striking out six and walking one.
Ashley Amistade singled through the left side with one out in the 10th, and after senior Kristin Gordon came in to pitch, Amistade was sacrificed to second before catcher Holly Stevens singled into left field to bring home the only run of the game.
The Panthers outhit the Bulls, 8-7. Sophomore Janine Richardson led the Bulls, recording two hits.
After two Pitt batters were called out on strikes, the Bulls defense made a play at home to keep the Panthers scoreless in the first inning. With a runner on first, Yvette Bravo doubled down the left field line. Holly Stevens on her way home, collided with catcher Cat Olnick, who tagged her out for the final out of the inning.
In extra innings, the Panthers were first to bat. With a leadoff single by Ciera Damon, two sacrifice bunts by Megan Livesey and Ashley Amistade moved Damon 60 feet away from scoring. Richardson stepped up, tossing three straight strikes to record her ninth strikeout of the game, holding the Panthers scoreless.
With one out, senior Cat Olnick singled in the bottom of the eighth, followed by a two-out single by Richardson. The Bulls threatened with runners on first and second but were unable to put a run across.
With the loss the Bulls fall to 1-5 in extra inning games this season. It also marked the seventh time USF has been shutout this year.
