TAMPA -- After taking a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, the University of South Florida baseball team (23-28, 14-9 BIG EAST) fell victim to a 10-run fifth inning by the Huskies as USF lost to No. 19 Connecticut, 13-5, Saturday night at Red McEwen Field.
UConn (40-11, 16-6) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after scoring a run in the first followed by a pair of runs in the top of the third inning on an RBI single and then a throwing error on an attempted double play on a line out to second.
The Bulls came back an inning later when they put four runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Todd Brazeal walked to start the inning and Jonathan Koscso singled into right to put the first two on.
Sam Mende bunted to third to move the runners over, but UConn second baseman Pierre LePage was late getting to the first-base bag as Mike Olt at third had to double-pump on the throw, allowing Mende the time to get to first.
Chad Taylor doubled down the left field line to plate the first two runs of the inning for USF, and one out later Eric Sim delivered a double down the left field line as well to bring home Mende and Taylor for the 4-3 lead.
The Huskies then put their 10-spot up in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
Joe Cole, who relieved Bulls starter Jimmy Moran, was tabbed with the loss after giving up seven runs on seven hits.
Cole retired the first two batters of the inning after working 1.2 innings of perfect relief but a misscommunication by Cole and Brazeal at first on an infield single put a runner on with two outs. The runner would mark the first of 11 straight batters to reach in the inning with two outs.
Offensively, USF was outhit 17-10 on the night. Sam Mende led the way with three hits for the Bulls while Eric Sim collected a pair of hits in as many at-bats to go along with two runs driven in.
UConn's 17 hits were the least of the Bulls problems as USF committed seven errors in the field, three by left fielder Ryan Lockwood.
The Bulls tacked on a final run in the ninth inning thanks to an RBI single with the bases loaded to complete the scoring for the Bulls.
Sunday's season finale will mark the final game at Red McEwen Field, the home of USF baseball since 1967.
Sunday's game will also serve as Senior Day as USF will honor seniors Andrew Salguiero, Teddy Kaufman, Matt Quevedo, Joe Cole and junior Matt Stull, who will not compete his final year due to injury.
The five will be recognized by Bulls head coach Lelo Prado during an on-field pregame ceremony. The mothers of the five seniors will throw out the game's first pitch.
First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
