CARBONDALE, Ill. - It truly was a great homecoming for USF volleyball senior Allie Boaz, as she returned to her home state and helped lead the Bulls (3-3) to a 3-0 sweep over Southeast Missouri in the opening game of the Saluki Invitational.
Boaz helped the Bulls defeat the Redhawks in straight sets (25-19, 25-18 and 25-19) to give the Bulls a W in their opening match of the tournament in Carbondale, Ill.
Boaz who stems from Belleville, Ill., not too far from Carbondale, had a large crowd of family and friends in attendance, and did not disappoint, as the senior collected 10 kills and hit .600 on the night.
Not to be outdone by the hometown kid, J'beria Davis also added 10 kills, while collecting 10 digs and hitting .241 from the outside.
The Bulls hit .253 as a team in the three set sweep, compared to just a .042 attack percentage for SEMO, and collected 34 kills as a team, committing just 10 errors. USF also out-blocked the Redhawks 14 to one on the night.
Mariana Thon collected 30 assists in the match, averaging 10 per set, while collecting six digs in the winning effort.
Kimika Rozier entered the game and put on a show in the second and third sets, rocketing four kills in seven attempts for a .429 percentage.
Caitlyn Breen recorded six block assists, while Boaz added four and Rodriguez Gomez helped on five blocks at the net.
USF got it going early, as they got three straight points to open the match 3-0. The Redhawks would claw their way back, tying the set at 13-13, but that is when the Bulls began to pull away. The Bulls stretched their lead to 19-15 after a block by Thon and Rodriguez Gomez, before keeping their foot on the gas behind four kills by the hometown hero, Boaz, to take set No. 1 25-19.
Boaz continued to roll in the second set adding another three kills, while the Bulls were paced by Davis, who added six kills in the second set alone, to give USF the set, 25-18, and the match advantage 2-0 heading into the locker room.
The breather would not slow down the Bulls, as they came out in the third set hitting .226 as a team. USF overcame the back-and-forth third set action to eventually stretch their lead to 20-17 on a powerful spike from Boaz, forcing SEMo to take a timeout.
Up 23-19 in the decisive third set, Davis and Boaz put the Redhawks to rest. Davis ripped a ball over the net to set up match point.
After a short volley, Southeast Missouris' Claire Keaton came up the left side, only to be blocked by who? The homegrown kid herself, Boaz, who assisted with Rodriguez Gomez to block the attack and end the match.
