TAMPA - The University of South Florida men's soccer team returned home to the friendly confides of the USF Soccer Stadium for the first time in 19 days tonight and realized that there was no place like home, especially for the Bulls' All-America goalkeeper Jeff Attinella.
After a rough showing on national television in its BIG EAST opener last Friday night at Connecticut, all it took was for Attinella and his USF brethren to get back into its element on its home turf to hand Rhode Island a convincing 2-0 loss.
In doing so, the senior net minder from Safety Harbor, Fla. set a new school record for shutouts in a career with 22, including his fourth of the year. Attinella establishes the new mark surpassing Jeff Gopsill who recorded 21 from 1990-93.
"Our defense really deserves the credit for tonight's win, and I only faced two shots," said Attinella. "Our defense really stepped it up tonight."
"As for the record, again, most all of the credit has to go to the defense," said Attinells. "I've had my games where I've helped them out, but the majority of the shutouts they have helped me out. I'm really proud of accomplishing this, but it's not just for me to be proud of, it's for the defense to be proud of as well."
The Bulls (5-2-1, 0-1-0 BIG EAST) put things away early and made things easy on their keeper scoring two goals in a span of less than three minutes as two players - Bernardo Anor and Javed Mohammed - accounted for all the scoring.
Anor would take possession of a corner kick from Mohammed, which found its way through the 18-yard box, and bury it into the back of the net in the 10th minute.
Then in just over the 13th minute of play - on almost the exact same play - Anor would take another Mohammed corner and beat Rams keeper Peyton Warwick.
On the night, the Bulls would dominate play outshooting Rhode Island 14-6, with seven of the shots coming on net, and were never really tested through the 90 minutes of play.
Attinella would have a relatively easy night recording two saves in his record setting win.
Rhode Island drops to 2-6-0 on the year.
USF will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 2 at 7:30 p.m. when it butts heads with Syracuse in its BIG EAST home opener.
