LEXINGTON, Ky. - The University of South Florida (2-3 overall) volleyball team battled back from a six point deficit in the fourth set to defeat Miami (OH) 3-1 in their finale of the Kentucky Classic on Saturday night.

The Bulls were able to respond after dropping the first set of the match 25-22, by winning the next three sets 27-25, 25-22 and 25-23, respectively.

The Bulls, who had dropped their opening match of the day to No. 16 Kentucky in five sets, had to return to the court for a second match just hours later with the Redhawks.

USF was led in the nightcap by junior libero Janice Rivera, who recorded a match-high 31 digs on the night. The Bulls also got 36 assists out of Mariana Thon along with four kills in eight attempts from the setter.

Miami outhit the Bulls .188 to .144, but the Bulls were able to keep themselves in the game and pull out the win in four sets.

USF fell behind early in the first set, and were able to get the score to within two points at 20-18 and 22-20, but the Redhawks were able to hold off the tired-legged Bulls to take the first set 25-20.

USF lost the first two sets of their match earlier in the day, but battled back to force a fifth set against No. 16 Kentucky, and they would not give up in the tournament finale either. USF came out on a tear in the second set, outhitting Miami .306 to .234 in the second frame.

The close fought second set, saw sophomore transfer J'beria Davis record four kills in 11 attacks for an impressive .364 percentage from the outside hitter position. The Clearwater, Fla. native had 10+ kills for the second straight match with 12.

Both teams exchanged points throughout the set, forcing to score to climb past 25, before the Bulls were finally able to pull it out 27-25 to head to the locker room deadlocked at one set apiece.

Kimika Rozier came out strong in the third set, recording three kills on six attacks to help the Bulls gain the early advantage. USF held leads of 4-1, 10-5 and 19-15 before finally putting away the Redhawks 25-22 in the third set.

After beginning the fourth set deadlocked 8-8, Miami began to pull away from the Bulls a little. The Redhawks went on a 7-2 run to go up 15-9.

Then the Bulls turned up the gas. USF battled all the way back to 23-20, when Mariana Thon began to serve for the Bulls. USF then reeled off five consecutive points to cap their comeback and take the match three sets to one.

The Bulls concluded the Kentucky Classic 1-2, and will return to action on Friday, Sept. 10 when they take part in the Saluki Invitational in Carbondale, Ill. for its third consecutive road trip.
