MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The University of South Florida women's basketball team couldn't overcome a big second half by West Virginia as the Mountaineers handed USF a 78-52 loss at WVU Coliseum in front of 4,555, the sixth largest crowd to see a women's basketball game in the arena.
Andrea Smith scored a team-high 16 points while twin sister Andrell added 12 points in the loss. Porche Grant grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
The Mountaineers came out of the gate quickly taking a 9-2 lead in back of six points from Medina Ali and a three-pointer from Liz Repella just over two minutes into the game.
The Bulls would settle down and fight their way back into the contest cutting the lead to one-point, 11-10, when Andrea Smith connected two free throws - the last two of four straight on back-to-back possessions - with 14:35 left in the first half.
After USF cut the lead to within a field goal, West Virginia would extend the edge to six points, and then eventually 10 points on a lay-up with 4:21 left making the score 33-23 Mountaineers.
The Bulls would cut the lead in half, 33-28, on a jumper by Andrea Smith with 1:54 left in the half, however, West Virginia would take a 35-28 lead into the locker room at the intermission.
The Mountaineers shot 51.7 percent (15-29) from the field in the first half while USF was just 9-30 (30 percent).
The Bulls came out in the second half scoring the first three points and cutting the lead to four, 35-31, on a driving lay-up by Daleisha Carn with 19:02 on the clock. West Virginia would come back with a jumper by Repella and a deep trey by Vanessa House with 17:53 making the score 40-31.
Carn would then hit another jumper with 17:27 left in the game to get USF to within seven, 40-33, however that would be the last field goal that the Bulls would see for nearly the next six and a half minutes until Akila McDonald hit a lay-up on a fast break with 10:51 left in the game, however by that point the Mountaineers held a commanding 59-35 advantage after going on a 19-0 run.
USF would not get closer than 19 the rest of the way.
USF now returns home to the Sun Dome on Tuesday, Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. to butt heads with Seton Hall.
