TAMPA - The University of South Florida women's basketball team earned its first BIG EAST win of the season, defeating Seton Hall 68-64 in the Sun Dome on Tuesday night. The win ends USF's seven-game losing streak.

The Bulls (10-11, 1-6 BIG EAST) had three players score double figures as Andrea Smith scored 22 points in the win, including 16 in the first half. Daleisha Carn and guard Sasha Bernard scored 12 and 10 points respectively.

Carn paced the way on the glass grabbing a team-high nine rebounds while Bernard set a new career high for rebounds, securing seven during the game.

With the loss, Seton Hall falls to 7-13 on the season and 0-7 in the BIG EAST.

Kandice Green and Jasmine Crew both scored 20 points for the Pirates and Green grabbed 11 rebounds on the night.

The game started off slow with the game tied at nine apiece at the 15:32 mark after Akila McDonald hit one of her two field goals off a Smith assist. USF then went on an 8-0 run, upping the score to 17-9 when Smith converted on a driving lay-up with 13:42 left in the half. Two free throws by Brittany Morris ended the streak and the Pirates got to within six, 17-11, with 12:48 left in the half.

With a strong defensive effort, forcing three turnovers on four trips down the court for the Pirates, the Bulls were able to hold Seton Hall to nine points the last 11 minutes of the half. Going into the locker room, USF had the lead 36-24.

The Bulls came out in the second half a little sluggish, only scoring nine points in the first 6:25 of play. The Pirates went on a 6-0 run cutting the lead to seven, 47-40, on a lay-up by Kandice Green with 11:12 left in the contest.

But Carn would end the drought with a lay-up, pushing the score to 49-40 with 10:43 left in the game.

USF would get the lead back to double digits, equaling its biggest advantage of the game, 14 points, when McDonald scored with 6:25 left making the score 58-44.

Seton Hall, however, tried to come back towards the end, going on a 11-2 run capped by a Brittany Morris lay-up with 3:43 left cutting the Bulls' lead to five, 60-55, with 3:16 left, but USF held on down the stretch for the win.

On the night, The Bulls dominated the paint outscoring the Pirates 48-22 in the lane. USF also shot 45.9 percent from the field including a 51.7 percent clip in the first half.

Up next for the Bulls is a date with Syracuse on Saturday, Jan. 29 at 1 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. USF will return home on Saturday, Feb. 5 when it butts heads with nationally ranked Notre Dame at 7 p.m. in the Sun Dome.
