TAMPA – The USF women's soccer team battled hard for 90 minutes Friday night but was unable to come away with the victory on Military Appreciation Night at Corbett Soccer Stadium falling to Connecticut 1-0.
After a scoreless first half, the Huskies (6-5-2, 2-0-2) were able to break through on an opportunity with 11:13 left in the game. Sophomore midfielder Devin Prendergast took a pass from Jennifer Skogerboe in the right side of the box and launched a shot into the upper left corner of the net to put Connecticut in the lead.
The Bulls (5-5-4, 1-3-3) had a couple of chances to tie it late in the game but couldn't capitalize. They controlled the match throughout and outshot the Huskies 23-7 in the match.
“I thought we were the stronger team, and this is a good team in the conference but we're seeing that time and time again that we're the stronger team and not shutting the door,” head coach Denise Schilte-Brown said.
The team will have to look to its senior class to help them turn the page and look forward to their match on Sunday afternoon against Providence.
“I'm looking forward to seeing their character and how they come out on Sunday. I really believe in this team and I think that we can still move forward,” Schilte-Brown said.
Eleven players will be honored for Senior Day on Sunday in the Bulls last regular season home game.
“They mean the world to me. They're soccer players but that isn't really what matters to us. It's the people that they are and the relationships we've built. For me, Sunday is another soccer game and an opportunity to give the seniors their gifts, but the true relationship for me will move on after the four years and it will be tough when the season is over,” Schilte-Brown said regarding the 11 seniors on the team.
Sunday's game against Providence is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Corbett Soccer Stadium.
