WASHINGTON, D.C. The The University of South Florida women's basketball team saw Georgetown come out of the gate quickly on the offensive end of the floor, and couldn't overcome an early 18-point first half Hoya lead, as Georgetown handed the Bulls a 67-38 loss on Tuesday night at McDonough Arena.
Sugar Rodgers led the way early for the Hoyas (20-5, 8-3 BIG EAST) as she hit four of Georgetown's eight first half three pointers in the first five minutes of the game as the home team built a 15-6 lead with 15:09 left before the intermission.
Georgetown would build its lead to as many as 24 points, 40-16, on a Rodgers three with 5:19 left in the first stanza, and then eventually take a 43-25 lead into the locker room at the break.
The Hoyas would end up shooting 51.6 percent (16-31) from the field in the first half, including a blistering 57.1 percent (8-14) from behind the three-point arc.
The Bulls (10-14, 1-9 BIG EAST), who were led by six points apiece from Andrea Smith, Akila McDonald and Daleisha Carn, hit just 37 percent (10-27) of their shots from the floor in the first 20 minutes of play.
USF would come out in the second half and cut the Hoya lead to 16 points on a layup by Andrell Smith with 16:01 left in the game.
The Hoyas, however, would use an 8-2 run to push their lead to 22 points, 55-33, with 10:15 left and stifle any potential USF run.
Andrea Smith would lead the Bulls with nine points, while Carn and Grant finished with eight points apiece.
The Bulls will close out their short two-game home stand on Saturday, Feb. 12 at 2 p.m. when they face Pittsburgh at the Petersen Events Center. USF will return home on Wednesday, Feb. 16 when it butts heads with St. John's at 7 p.m. The game against the Red Storm will be Military Appreciation Night.
