The No. 25 University of South Florida women's tennis team dropped a tough 5-2 decision to in-state foe and No. 2 ranked Florida on Tuesday in Gainesville.
The Bulls dropped all three matches in doubles to fall behind 1-0 early in the day. The marquee doubles matchup saw the nation's top-ranked tandem of Sofie Oyen and Allie Will defeat USF's 25th-ranked pairing of Loreto Alonso Martinez and Janette Bejikova, 8-3.
In singles play, USF got wins from Ecaterina Vasenina at the No. 2 spot and Bejikova at the No. 4 spot. Vasenina defeated No. 96 Oyen 6-2, 7-6 and Bejikova defeated No. 22 Olivia Janowicz 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (12-10).
The Bulls' top-ranked player, No. 24 Irene Rehgerger, dropped her match to Lauren Embree 6-0, 6-3.
Alessandra Bonte fell to No. 28 Alex Cercone 6-1, 6-3, and Florida's Caroline Hitimana dropped Kate Parker 6-3, 6-1 to clinch the match for the Gators. Martinez also dropped her match 7-5, 6-4 to No. 30 Joanna Mather.
